Roasted Potatoes

I will be sharing one of the easiest recipes within my favorite roasted potatoes series. This roasted potatoes recipe is suitable for both adults and kids. Before we get into the recipe, let’s explore the history of roasted potatoes.

Where did Roasted Potatoes come from?

Roasted Potatoes originated from Sunday Roast which began in the late 1700s, during the industrial revolution in the United Kingdom, families would place a cut of meat into the oven as they got ready for church on Sunday. They would add in vegetables such as potatoes, broccoli, peas, and carrots before going to church on a Sunday morning. The meat and vegetables are roasted in vegetable oil or meat drippings.

Recipe Ingredients

Here are the recipe ingredients for the recipe:

Roasted Potatoes Ingredients
  • 600 gram red and yellow creamer potatoes (optional. You may choose the other type of potatoes) – Potatoes is the main ingredients in this recipe!
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil – The oil will help to crisp up the skins that were dehydrated during the long time roast.
  • 1/2 tbsp of black pepper – Piperine is the main active ingredients in black peppercorns, which is the source of black pepper’s heat characteristics. It has a unique taste and delicious. It always can bring a whole range of flavors to the table when applied to the right dishes.
  • 1 tbsp of oregano – The flavor of oregano is bold and earthy with a slight bitterness.
  • 1 tbsp of thyme – The flavor of dried thyme will have a sharp, almost minty flavor. It’s definitely pair well with potatoes.

What Kind of Potatoes Should I Use?

Most potatoes are suitable for roasting including Yukon Gold, Red, Desiree, Kipfler, Russet, Sebago, Dutch Cream, or even purple sweet potato. In this recipe, I will choose the tiny fresh creamer potatoes which are charming red and yellow in color. These little potatoes play beautifully together, delivering silky smooth textures and subtle, fluffy flavors after roasting.

Should you peel off the potato’s skin before roasting? It depends. My family and I love the flavor and color of the potato’s skin and thus we never peel off the potato’s skin when we roast it.

Should Potatoes be soaked before roasting?

soaking potatoes before roasting

Yes, definitely. I strongly recommend doing this. Soaking potatoes will help the potatoes get crispy when it was roasted. The reason is that when potatoes are soaked in cold water, the excess starch within will be removed. Excess starch prevents potatoes from cooking evenly and usually make roasted potatoes sticky on the outside. Soaking the potatoes in cold water can help prevent potatoes from browning too quickly during cook time. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch and activate it, hot water will cause the starch hard to separate from the potatoes.

What to Serve/Pair with the Roasted Potatoes?

  • Roasted Leg of Lamb – Best protein choice to serve with roasted potatoes. Roasted potatoes with lamb’s leg make a great party dish. It is one of the best combination in my opinion.
  • Pork Chops – Juicy pork chops with dried herbs seasoning is best pairing with roasted potatoes for weekend lunch or dinner with friends and family.
  • Steak – Juicy steak is also one of the top choices when you need some hearty fare to go with your roasted potatoes.
  • Barbeque – Barbeque during summer is one of my favorites. Barbeque chicken or pork has strong smoky, sweet, and savory tastes. The starchiness of roasted potatoes is the best side dish to balance the rich and decadent taste of barbeque meal.
