Chinese Scallion pancake (葱油饼) also known as spring onion pancake is one of the well-known traditional street food in China. Normally people take it as breakfast. It is simple to make your own scallion pancake at home. Some restaurants are like to make a big, thick one that they cut into wedges and serve as an accompaniment to a meal.

Recipe Ingredients

The recipe calls for:

  • Plain (all-purpose) flour
  • Spring Onions (Scallions)
  • Sesame oil
  • five spices powder
  • salt
  • sesame
  • water

How to make the Chinese Scallion pancake?

  • Prepare a large mixing bowl. Add in the flour and salt and stir to combine. Add the boiling water and, using chopsticks or spoon, mix to a rough dough. Put some flour on the dough, and knead for 5 minutes. If the dough is still sticky, you may knead in a little more flour. When you feel the dough is smooth enough, cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • After resting, using a small rolling pin, roll it out to a large rough circle. Brush the surface with some sesame oil, Chinese five spice powder, sesame and chopped scallion. Roll up the dough and pinch the ends. Cut it into 6 – 8 small pieces of dough.
  • Pinching the end of the small dough to seal it. Place each small dough flat on the workplace and using a small rolling pin to roll it to a round circle pancake.
  • Heat a frying pan with a middle fire and put some cooking oil, then placed the scallion pancake. Cook for 2 minutes on each side. Use the spatula to press the pancake from time to time to ensure the pancake is cook evenly.
