What is calamari?

Calamari is the Italian word for squid and it is also a culinary term for squid meat. In the United States, the most common preparation of calamari is the breaded and deep-fried squid. When you order calamari in the restaurant, you will get fried squid that looks pretty like fried onion rings. It has a crispy texture and a mildly sweet flavor. It is often served with fresh parsley and lemon. Depending on the method of cooking, squid could be chewy and some people don’t like it.

Is calamari a squid or octopus?

Calamari is made from a type of squid and not an octopus. You can easily distinguish calamari from the shape of the squid.

So when you see the ring shapes, then it is squid. These are the slices of the squid head which is empty inside and look like rings when you cut them crosswise. In comparison, the octopus has a small head and long tentacles. Its head is not edible, and the tentacles are firm and covered with many suckers. So if you have an octopus dish, then it should contain giant tentacles with suckers. Squid also have tentacles, but they are smaller in size, and similarly, their suckers are also smaller.

So it is easy to distinguish between the octopus and squid dish only if you know how they look like: their head, tentacle shapes, and size. So, we hope now that you will not get an octopus instead of squid while purchasing from the market to make a calamari dish.

What part of squid is calamari?

The tentacles and body parts are edible from squid. The squid’s body is usually sliced crosswise for making the calamari rings. Moreover, if you want to cook calamari steaks, you can split and flatten the squid body to prepare steaks.

How to clean and prepare calamari?

Keep in mind that you require a clean squid to prepare a calamari dish. The cleaning process of calamari involves removing the head, viscera, quill ( inner cartilage), and skin. Tentacles are the edible portion of the squid.

How to cook calamari?

Now you have cleaned and well-prepared squid and ready for cooking. Choose the cooking method according to your preference, like grilling, broiling, deep frying, and sauteing. Although many peoples like to eat it raw like sushi, deep-fried calamari is still the most preferable method. You can marinate or soak the squid rings into seasoning sauces for better taste. Dip the squid rings into flour and milk and then dip-fry for 2-3 minutes. You should have golden brown crispy calamari ready to be served.

Marinated calamari contains the flavor of the chosen seasoning as it is good at absorbing the taste of the spices and sauces. Deep-fried calamari is crunchy outside with a tender texture inside. Squid is low in saturated fat. Doctors and health professionals advise reducing the intake of saturated fat and trans fat for those who are facing high cholesterol problems. When squid is deep-fried into a calamari dish, its total fat and saturated fat content increases, and thus the fried calamari becomes an unhealthy food and not suitable for people with high cholesterol.

It depends on your school of thought (madhhab): In the Sunni school, squid is Halal as they follow the rule “Everything the sea bears is Halal” unless an exception is specifically mentioned in the source. In the Shi’a school of thought, the answer is more complicated. Only sea creatures with scales are considered halal with some exceptions. Specifically, it is not permissible to eat from marine animals anything else except fish, shrimp, and prawns which are considered from that category of permissible sea animals. But other than fish, lobster and fish that do not have scale are forbidden.
